The Ultimate Technical SEO Audit Checklist for 2025

Technical SEO is the foundation everything else builds on. You can have the best content and strongest backlinks, but if your technical setup is broken, you’re leaving rankings on the table.

Here’s the exact checklist we run on every new client site.

1. Crawlability & Indexation

  • Verify robots.txt is correctly configured
  • Check XML sitemap is submitted and error-free
  • Confirm all important pages are indexable (no accidental noindex)
  • Check for crawl errors in Google Search Console
  • Verify crawl budget isn’t being wasted on paginated/faceted URLs
  • Check for redirect chains (should be max 1 hop)

2. Core Web Vitals

Google’s Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking factor. Your targets:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): < 2.5 seconds
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): < 200ms
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): < 0.1

Common fixes:

  • Optimize and serve next-gen image formats (WebP/AVIF)
  • Preload critical resources
  • Use font-display: swap
  • Minimize render-blocking JavaScript

3. Mobile-First Optimization

  • Site is fully responsive
  • Font sizes are legible on mobile (min 16px body)
  • Touch targets are adequately sized (min 44x44px)
  • No horizontal scrolling
  • Mobile page speed is acceptable

4. Site Architecture

  • URL structure is clean and logical
  • Internal linking supports crawl priority
  • Breadcrumbs are implemented
  • Canonical tags are correctly set
  • No orphan pages (pages with zero internal links)
  • Depth from homepage: important pages within 3 clicks

5. Schema Markup

Implement appropriate schema for your site type:

  • All sites: Organization, WebSite, BreadcrumbList
  • Blog: Article, BlogPosting
  • E-commerce: Product, Offer, Review
  • Local business: LocalBusiness, PostalAddress
  • SaaS: SoftwareApplication

6. International SEO (If Applicable)

  • hreflang tags are correctly implemented
  • Language/country targeting is set in Search Console
  • Alternate pages are canonically correct
  • Content is truly localized (not just translated)

7. Security & Trust Signals

  • HTTPS on all pages
  • No mixed content warnings
  • Security headers are configured
  • Site has a valid SSL certificate

Running Your Audit

We recommend using a combination of:

  • Screaming Frog for crawl analysis
  • Google Search Console for index/performance data
  • PageSpeed Insights for Core Web Vitals
  • Ahrefs/SEMrush for backlink and keyword data

A full technical audit of a 1,000-page site typically takes 20-40 hours. For most sites, you’ll find 30-50 issues, with 5-10 being critical.
